National Mushroom Company (Kashira) — Russia 2010 - Day 25

Today my students and I visited the National Mushroom Company in Kashira, Russia (near Tula, where i recently visited), which is 120 Kilometers south of Moscow. This is the largest mushroom producer in Russia, shipping more than 12,000 KG of Champignon mushrooms every day. The main concept is that the mushrooms are grown on a medium of pasteurized straw and chicken manure. Before the mixture is added to the metal shelves in the environmentally controlled vaults, "spawn" seeds are mixed into the medium. We were fortunate to have Alexander Khrenov, the Director of the Russia Mushroom School, join us for the two hour ride and share a lot of fascinating information about the industry.
