This evening, Sergey led the American students, Michael from France, Galya from Russia and a student named Evelyna from Poland and myself on an excursion to a famous landmark in Moscow, Ostankino Tower. Although we took a metro for the first leg of the trip, transportation for the second half was on an experimental mode of transportation, the Moscow Monorail. This is a “leg” of transportation that links two of the metro lines on the north side of Moscow (close to our hostel).
Ostankino is a 1772 ft. tall building that was once the largest free-standing building in the world. Many of the Moscow TV stations use this building to broadcast their signals. The view (although it just got dark when we got to the top) was really amazing. It was also neat that there were thick glass plates that you could stand on and look straight down to the ground. The cost for me was 500 Rubles (just over $16) and 300 Rubles for students ($10). We also had to make advance reservations to visit, which is why we had to go in the evening as no real daytime tickets were available for weeks.
Near the Moscow Monorail station, Telecentro, closest to the tower, Sergey pointed out that all of the studios for the TV shows based in Moscow are next door. We had a wonderful evening out, thanks to our good friend Sergey Kleymenov.
